References : Installing School Computer Labs

Gauteng Online

All government schools in the Gauteng Province will get a modern and secure computer lab which gives many opportunities to learners and teachers. For most schools this means a replacement of the current computer lab. For some it will be the introduction of a computer lab. The labs work with a so called thin client concept. The applications are not on a PC but are on a centralised server. Each lab has 25 of these thin clients.

A computer lab is build up as follows:

  • Thin client computers with a mouse, keyboard, screen and 2 headphones
  • Microsoft Office package on each thin client
  • Internet connection via special antenna
  • Teachers desk
  • Flat screen TV
  • Servers including a firewall
  • Switch and cabled network
  • Extra alarm system on the computer equipment

Our participation – Quality results

  • In the period January – June 2009 we installed 40 computer labs.
  • In that same period we installed 25 antenna’ s or subscriber units.
  • We worked on the remedy process, which deals with finalising and Quality Assurance. We remedied more than 50 schools.

Rivoni Skills is regarded as a quality subcontractor. We have proven to be a reliable partner for the project. Before we leave a school we make sure the lab is in full working order and the place is neat and tidy. We do not want to compromise on quality as this will compromise the quality and image of our customer and the Gauteng Online project as a whole.

References : Up skilling admin staff
At a commercial organisation which does large projects the admin staff could not support management due to a lack of skills. We identified the problem areas, which were partly in the area of the soft skills: time management, prioritising and pro-activity.

We used an integrated and practical approach and trained on-site.

Step 1 was learning the tools, like word processor, spreadsheet, etc.

Step 2 was how to use the tools in their own specific business environment.

This is the part where people were taken out of their comfort zones by putting on pressure and giving tough exercises. We took real live practical examples from the company and used those in the training.

Management wanted changed people and we brought that real change together with the people involved.
